Cannot Restore Backup Version an Unknown Error Occurred

There is a nasty little bug that sometimes causes Backups (and any attempted Restore) to fail on a workshared project.  The way to avoid this problem is so simple that it should probably be implemented on all workshared projects in your office:

check Regenerate if view/sheet is not up-to-date.  This will create a thumbnail for the non-opened view to be included with the initial backup version and eliminate the error message when saving the backup version.

However - if you have already come across this problem and it is too late to check the above box ... you may be able to get the Restore to work IF you reinstate an appropriately named preview.xxxx.dat file into the _backup folder.  Its worth a try if you are struggling to recover some important data.

Here the condition number will allow only one paramter to be true in a list. Associated with a type, you could control a ton of things simply back picking the correct type.

"Don't Change Me Bro"



If you need some text to not change, put that text in the Formula column with quotes around it. It greys it out in the Value column. This should stop the majority of users from changing its value.

Stair Path Annotations in Revit 2013

Pre-2013 sketch based stairs have the Stair Path bound to the actual Stair element.  In Revit 2013 when using Component Stairs, the Stair Path becomes a separate element.  Think of it as a special Tag for Stairs.  The Stair Path tool is located on the Annotate ribbon:



You can safely delete the path from views where you don't want to see it.  It seems that these are automatically created in certain Plan views - I'm unsure what the 'rule' governing the automatic creation of Stair Paths is, yet.

The Stair Path is a System Family.  You can Duplicate existing Path types to create and customize the Stair Path to your liking:


Also, the Categories related to Stair UP and DOWN text have all been moved to the Annotation Categories in Visibility / Graphics!  You won't find them under Model - Stairs anymore:

Formatting large drives as FAT32 in Windows

Windows 7 does not easily allow you to format a USB drive using the FAT32 filesystem.  Some media devices do not understand NTFS, and they need drives to be formatted as FAT32 (such as PlayStation 3 / PS3)

To format large drives using FAT32 in Windows, you can use a program called Swissknife:

Then:

• install it.
• plug your hard drive in your pc 
• open the program.
• click your drive in the devices list.
• click format to erase everything.
• once finished click partition type and select primary and then file system and select fat32.
• drag the bar to the right of the pie chart all the way to the bottom, so the whole pie chart turns blue.
• click create.

Let's say you have installed Revit 2013 but you want to use Revit 2012 as your default Revit for the time being (and I don't blame you).

Here are the steps from RevitForum (thanks Menschmal).

Instructions to set the correct revit.exe file as default for opening Revit files from the file browser in Windows 7
(e.g. I am testing Revit Architecture 2012, but I want 2011 to be my default for now)


Open the Registry Editor (type regedit in the command line in Windows). If you are concerned about messing something up, back up the registry before making any changes.


In the Registry Editor browse the tree to the branch below:


HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Revit.Project\ shell\open\command


In the right pane you will see:


Name: (Default)
Type: REG_SZ
Data: "C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Revit Architecture 2011\Program\Revit.exe" /dde


Double-click on (Default) and the Edit String dialog box will open.


Edit the Value data field for the correct location for the version of Revit you want to use. For example, I changed 2012 to 2011.


Close the Registry Editor and you are good to go. This change seems to be the universal default for all extensions that open with the Revit.Project application (.rvt, .rfa, etc.).

UseGraphicsHardware=0 if running Revit 2013 on Macbook with Parallels

As per the Revit Architecture 2013 Known Issues:

 Hardware acceleration is not available in the Parallels 7 environment, and Revit will revert to a DirectX 9 based software graphics mode, which will not render materials, sky, artificial lights, and other features when the Realistic visual style is in effect.

o   Workaround 1: When you first start Revit and see the Graphics Options - Cannot Use Hardware Acceleration dialog, select the Save Hardware Acceleration Setting option, and then close and restart Revit. Upon restart, DirectX 11 software mode will be used and features will display correctly in Realistic visual style.

o   Workaround 2: Manually add the following to the [Graphics] section of the Revit.ini file before startup:   UseGraphicsHardware=0

EDIT: Workaround 3 (allow hardware acceleration hack) - from Gordon in the comments:Dig down to the Revit folder in program files, where Revit.exe lives, and look for a file called AdskHardwareCertificationReport.xml. Delete this file. Revit will now allow you to enable hardware acceleration, and performance will be MUCH better than the no HA fallback of using WARP (which is an API that uses the CPU to mimic graphics hardware and manages to provide performance on par with, say Intel HD2000 hardware). WARP is much better than true hardware acceleration disabled as in earlier versions, but no where near as good as Parallels virtual hardware.

Workaround 1 did not present itself to me, but workaround 2 was pretty easy to achieve:

UseGraphicsHardware=0
 
I added the last line above to the 2013 Revit.ini file, restarted RAC 2013, and….

Most of us use the old Reference Line with angular dimension method to control rotation in our vanilla Revit families.

However, Marcello Sgambelluri has posted three alternative methods to control rotation and angular dimensions, with full step-by-step instructions, at his blog Simply Complex.

Marcello says:
I have given three rotation rig methods that do not use the angular dimension parameter in these last two postings. These methods are the Ride the Rail method, the Open Reference Circle method, and the Revolve method.

So the method names again are:

What does Revit eStorage do?
Stores and Restores the data of an external file into Revit extensible storage on a selected element.

How to install (from the readme):
Copy the following files to the appropriate Revit Addins folder,
either "%AppData%\Autodesk\REVIT\Addins\2013"
or "%AppData%\Autodesk\REVIT\Addins\2012":

- ADNPlugin-eStorage.addin: add-in manifest
- ADNPlugin-eStorage.bundle: bundle folder which contains all
other supporting materials

In this 30 second video example, I take a PDF file and save it in the extensible storage of a Raster Image in Revit, then I Restore the contents back out of the image into a PDF file again!



Using the 'List' button shows all of the file data stored in extensible storage in the current RVT project.

This actually reminds me a little bit of VEO Archive (a model linked document library) ... the concept of attaching documents and file data to elements in a Building Information Model is actually VERY powerful!

EDIT: Guess what - you can also store this file data in family RFA files!  Yay.  For example, I opened a Door family and then attached a PDF to a Text Note.  I then loaded this into a project, closed the source family, and opened it again FROM the project - and the extensible data stays with the Family.

EDIT 3: How about this for an idea - set up a File Browser drafting view with Text Notes.  Then, attach project related documents to these notes using eStorage.

• This could be very handy in a Worksharing scenario as a way to push out Meeting Minutes / Agendas / Deadline documents inside the Revit model
• You could even scale this idea up to Revit Server as a way to track, update and distribute project related documents throughout the globe!

EDIT 4: What about embedding your Project Standards as a RVT file in eStorage?  Whenever you want to Transfer Project Standards, just save the file out, open it and go for it.
